About the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide

The Hawaii Radio & Television Guide, is a one stop place for news, listings and links to Hawaii based broadcast and cable resources.

The main feature of the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide are dialists to radio and television stations in the state of Hawaii. These dialists are broken down into radio listings for each Hawaiian island and broadcast and cable TV lists for the entire state.

Radio Stations in Hawaii: There are more than 60 radio stations in Hawaii, most of which are located on the island of Oahu. The neighor islands have their own radio stations. Most FM stations, being line of sight, are receivable only on the island on which they are located. Some FMs have a wider range due to signal strength and location of transmitters. Other FM stations have set up relay links on the neighbor islands, and may have a farther reach. Most AM stations are receivable between most of the islands. AM radio stations from the west coast of the U.S. mainland can be received from some parts of the state during the night time hours.

The radio dial listings are broken down by island counties: Oahu, Kauai, Maui (covering Molokai and Lanai) and the Big Island. Each page have tabled frequency, call letter and format listings plus links and e-mail addresses where applicable. Addresses to the radio stations can be accessed through the Address Center page or following the link from each of the island radio station list pages.

Satellite Radio: Currently none of the satellite radio subscription services are available in Hawaii.

Television in Hawaii: Television viewers throughout the state get all of the major network TV shows at the same time statewide. Prime time viewing hours in Hawaii is from 7 and 10 p.m. nightly, and 6 to 10 p.m. on Sundays.

Local newscasts with network feeds occur during the weekday morning hours (5 a.m. to 8 a.m.) and early evenings, usually between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Late night local newscasts occur during the 10 p.m. timeslot.

Until recently, Hawaii's late night newcasts have had a tradition of not starting precisely at 10 p.m. This is due to the fact that a higher number of local commercials are added into the prime time programming by some stations.

In January 1999, KHON and KITV switched to a "clock time" policy, which means the late news on these 2 channels start at 10 p.m. KGMB TV made that switch a year later. KHNL News 8 swtiched to clock time this year.

Breaking news and national weekend sports events are carried live. All other network programming feeds are generally carried on a statellite-delayed basis to accomodate the time difference between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland.

Hawaii's Televison page is a guide to broadcast and cable TV companies. The broadcast dial includes a listing with appropriate links to all the major network channels and primary relays throughout the state. A listing of Hawaii's public access, cable TV and wireless cable TV companies are also posted on the Hawaii Television Page.

Hawaii Based Television Programs: Over the years many locally produced television shows have come and gone. The guide features a list of current and past television shows on the air in the Hawaii market. Links to the programs' respective home pages are noted when applicable.

The Hawaii Radio & Television Guide home page includes the News Over The Air section and a growing archive section. Broadcast station and company address links are now found on the resepctive dial list pages for each section. The Radio Resources page continues to link to Hawaii based radio shows and external radio industry websites. The same can be said of the Television Resources page. The ever popular Message Board and a general Hawaii links page round out the rest of the guide.

History of the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide: I started publishing a list of radio stations on local bulletin boards a few years back. The guide started from these lists and grew in scope as the lists were expanded to cover neighbor island radio and television before making its transition to the Internet in 1995. The first edition of the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide went online at Hawaii's H4 website in May 1995 and moved to LavaNet that June. The site moved to its own domain in February 2002.

I hope you find the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide a useful resource of information. Comments, news, corrections and suggestions can be sent to my e-mail address listed below. Thanks for stopping by.
