Clear Channel HD Radio Streams on the Web

HD Radio HD Radio is in Hawaii but few know about it. In order to receive an HD radio signal, a special HD radio receiver must be purchased. Current models sell for about $250. There are only 4 HD radio stations broadcasting in the Honolulu market. They are owned by Clear Channel. The stations are KSSK 92.3-1 (adult contemporary music) and KSSK 92.3-2 (smooth jazz) and KUCD 101.9-1 (modern rock) and KUCD 101.9-2 (Hawaii's Hard Rock). The secondary HD stations are playing commercial free music. Those without HD sets can listen to many of Clear Channel's HD stations by selecting the streams from the following website:

  • Clear Channel Music HD Radio
KUCD 101.9-2 is the only Hawaii station with a stream on that site.

    June 15, 2007 Update

The big news in Hawaii this week has got to be the filming of ABC TV's "Extreme Makeover Home Edition" show in Kalihi Valley. Some lucky family got to have an entire house and supporting structure built for them in the space of one week! Surprisingly there were hardly any bureaucratic state or city roadblocks to this ambitious project undertaken by a lot of volunteers. The entire process was recorded and will be broadcast in September as the series kicks off a new season on ABC. Much discussion at this link.

Erika Engle reports on a "Spam" TV special coming to KHON TV and the sale of several radio stations on the Big Island including a group consisting of KIPA AM, KGBX FM, and KKOA FM. Details at this link.

It is sad to report that Jim Demarest, one of the three people who played Mr. Checkers on KGMB TV's long running kids show of the 1970s and early 80s, Checkers & Pogo, passed away on Tuesday, June 12. Details at this link. Discussion Topic.

KGMB TV's 10 o'clock newscast is still holding on to the number one spot for the latest Nielsen rating period that ended in May. Channel 2's KHON TV News has lost some of its share during the evening hours of 5 and 6. The number one network for prime time programming in Hawaii this past period is ABC (KITV) with CBS (KGMB) second. Details on the latest Nielsens are at this link.

From time to time we will be posting interesting video feeds from local media to this site. First up is a rather infamous flub that happened at KHON TV Channel 2 this past Saturday June 9. The weekend 6 o clock news was cursed with technical gremlins as on-air staff tried to cope the best they could with them. The video is streamed here from the embed tag option allowed from the host site, in this case Google. There is a high possibility that the video could be removed as it has been after it was posted to YouTube this week. Much disucssion on this has been made at our Media Forum on HawaiiThreads.com.

    May 9, 2007 Update

Publisher's Note: Sorry for no updates in more than a month. Been very busy and sort of neglecting this site. Still planning to do a site overhaul. Anyone into site design who would like to take on this? I may be looking for a Honolulu based web designer to redo most of the site. If you are interested and if you are affordable (I don't have much money) email me and perhaps we can talk.

While I was away developments in the news included:

Winter Arbitron Ratings came out on this past week. Again KSSK rules the morning drive airwaves with longtime morning team Michael W. Perry and Larry Price perched way out in front, at the top with more than 20% of the morning share. KSSK is also the #1 overall station again. However as noted in this article, KRTR FM is #2 in morning drive and #1 for the 25 - 54 age group, a higly coveted demo seeked by advertisers. Both stations feature adult contemporary music formats.

Perry & Price in the news: Larry Price and Michael W. Perry of KSSK radio have been the subject of a week-long controversy involving an alleged racial statement made during an on-air interiew with State Senator Gary Hooser last Friday morning May 4. During the interview Hooser's racial background and home state became the subject controversy when Price asked him about his "eye color" and "where he was born and raised". Much has been written and discussed about the incident. Discussion rages on at HawaiiThreads.com and Malia Zimmerman of HawaiiReporter.com (among many other local media outlets) writes about it too.

Lastly the ABC TV series "Lost" which is filmed on Oahu was renewed for a 4th season this year and will come back for 2 more seasons after that. ABC TV announced that "Lost" will air until the year 2010 in 16-episode season to allow the producers and writers to plan and wrap up the storyline. It is an unprecdented announcement for a network TV show. "Lost" has lost some of its viewing audience from its heyday of 2004 to 2006. Ratings have declined after ABC TV moved the show to a new, and later timeslot on Wednesday nights.

Updates to radio and TV dial lists are going to be done over the weekend.

New Radio Stations Signing on in Hawaii
Commentary from Mel's Internet Universe Weblog

In the last few weeks two new radio stations have signed on in the Hawaii market. This past week radio station KHAI FM at 103.5 became radio active with their Christian rock Air 1 format. The station's activation was covered today in Erika Engle's Buzz Column as well as a few days earlier in a Hawaii Media Forum post made at HawaiiThreads.com. KHAI's new signal is a marked improvement over the weak low power transmitter they had for a few years playing Air 1's format. That signal could only be heard in some parts of West Oahu.

The other new station signing on is Visionary's KMKK FM at 102.3. which is playing an all Hawaiian music format. The station can be heard in certain parts of Oahu. The facilities for KMKK are located on the island of Molokai, which may be an ideal location if Visionary's goal is to have KMKK service three communities... Maui, Molokai and Oahu. We'll see who buys advertising on this station.

Several other radio stations may hit Hawaii's crowded airwaves as new frequencies are snatched up and become active.
