KTUH PD Announces Launch of Membership Drive
    March 11, 2007.

My name is Monty Anderson. I am the General Manager of KTUH, the station for the University of Hawaii at Manoa. We are preparing to launch our new annual Membership Drive on March 19th, and I thought some of your folks might be interested to learn more about the station.

BTW, the frequency info on your site for KTUH has changed. 87.9 no longer exists. It has been replaced with 89.9 Windward. We also have a webstream at ktuh.org.

I’ve come to realize most people do not understand how unique and precious college radio truly is. We have 56 different shows and operate live 24hrs each day all year, even through summer and the Winter breaks. There is a living, breathing person in the studio even at 3:AM!

The difference between college and commercial radio is vast. At KTUH, creative control of each show is left completely up to each DJ, with sufficient guidance from the Programming Department, which brings a high level of fresh and quality music to the community—not to mention the eclectic mix of opinion and personality. KTUH is a sub-population of the university, the institution that is training our future leaders, thinkers, scientists, musicians. College is where the world moves forward, and by tuning into KTUH, the community can get a first-hand glimpse.

The primary difference between commercial and college programming is one thing: the music. Students are drawn to be a part of KTUH because of their intense love of music and expression, and thanks to the University, we have the opportunity to share our love with the world. We broadcast with three frequencies on Oahu , statewide on digital cable, and worldwide on the webstream. I receive messages from individuals around the globe— Turkey , Argentina , Serbia , Australia —thanking us for our broadcasts.

With this Membership Drive , we will be utilizing some of the funds to launch our annual scholarship awards, as well as assisting with operations, since next year’s budget will be dramatically reduced because of an expected low student enrollment.

As you can probably tell, I’m very proud of this station and of my staff. KTUH has a legacy going back before we obtained our official FCC license in 1969, and as far as I know, I am the first blind General Manager/Program Director the station has ever had.
