KGMB News Tops Channel 2 at 10:PM Timeslot
Joe Moore has been toppled at 10. In the fierce race for bragging rights of being #1, KGMB TV's Channel 9 News with Kim Gennaula and Keahi Tucker edged out the dominant KHON TV newscast at the 10pm slot for the May Nielsen ratings period. KHON TV still dominates the 5:00, 5:30 and 6:00 pm news time slots, which are anchored by Joe Moore at 5:30 and 6 and Leslie Wilcox at 5. Their morning news gets 50 to 80 percent of the audience.
The top local network shows are "American Idol" on Fox/KHON TV, "CSI" on CBS/KGMB, "Desparate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy" on ABC/KITV. ABC's "Lost" has been beaten in the Wednesday night time slot by Fox's "American Idol," though it still remains a top 10 show.

LOW POWER AM FROM UH HILO: The University of Hawaii has its first radio station. Low power AM radio station URH (UHH Radio) at 1640 on the AM dial started broadcasting this spring. The non-profit radio station features a format of free form music similar to what is offered at KTUH at the UH Manoa Campus. The volunteer disc jockeys pick the music. A station spokesperson said that they aim to go to 3KW like their UH Manoa counterpart in the future. The station is also streaming their content at their website: http://radio.uhh.hawaii.edu/#
KONI, KORL, KITH and KTOH LINKED: A common URL to HHawaiiMedia radio station websites KONI FM, KORL AM, KITH and KTOH FM was recently brought to my attention. These sites can now be viewed from http://www.hhawaiimedia.net/, which serves as a common gateway to information on each radio station. There are also teaser announcements for a new Maui FM station at 92.5 and a new Oahu AM at 1130.
NEWS DIRECTOR AT KGMB TV: Chris Archer has become a discussion topic on our message board after he was named as the news director for KGMB TV Channel 9. He succeeded Tauna Lange who left the station in March. Newslink | Discussion Topic
HDTV OWNERS DISAPPOINTED AT LACK OF AVAILABILITY: They have the technology. Most of the major network TV channels are already broadcasting a HDTV signal. But the cable company is not carrying any HDTV of our local channels except for KITV 4. More details: StarBulletin.com | Honolulu Advertiser | Discussion Topic
SITE LINKED TO DXers: I got notice a few weeks ago that the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide website has been linked to a Radio Worldwide DXing website in Germany. They track radio stations that they listen to from all over the world. Site Link: Dxer.info.
PUBLISHER'S NOTE: It's been a while since the last update to this page and site. I have been way too busy with other projects, but hopefully now I have time to once again resume with the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide and bring this site up to date. I am planning to go to a blog format but still maintain this page with the blog contents syndicated back here. This will hopefully make it easier for me to update the news section and will possibly open the door for collaboration on the site.
Secondly, I know some if not all of the listings need to be brought up to date. The TV channel listings and several radio station listings as well as their website links will be worked on very soon. If anyone knows of a very user friendly database program that works on a Macintosh and can be easily used to create and maintain a listings file on this website, please let me know. My email address is macpro3000@yahoo.com A site redesign is also in the works.

Low Power Energy 101.1 FM Starts Broadcast of Non-Stop Dance Music
This past weekend saw the debut of KXRG radio at 101.1 on the FM dial. The station is playing non-stop dance music and is going by the monicker "Energy 101.1". It's a low power station broadcasting from the middle of the city with a reported range of about 10 miles or so. Reception is strong in town. The station broadcasts from 2pm to 2am daily. It is owned by Ohana Broadcasters Corporation, according to FCC records. The station is non-profit and according to its website will subsist on listener donations.
Listeners in Honolulu who preferred to listen to the somewhat distant signal of Maui's 101.1 FM "The Point" will be shut out of that broadcast whenever KXRG is on the air.

Change Continues at Hawaii's KHON TV
The big news this year in Hawaii's media landscape is the finalizaton of KHON TV's sale from Emmis Communications to SJL Acquistion, LLC late last year. SJL in turn renamed themselves Montecito Broadcast Group LLC and announced earlier this year that more than 30 workers, those mainly in production would be laid off in the station's move to more automation. This resulted in more than a half dozen of the station's department heads resigning over the differences of the new owners management style. The exodus was led by KHON TV Senior Vice President and General Manager Rick Blangiardi. Others soon followed. So far the on-air staff have remained in place with lead anchor Joe Moore making a public statement that he was staying with the station for the current term of his contract.
KHON TV is Hawaii's Fox network affiliate and home to the top rated Channel 2 6 o clock and 10 o clock weeknight evening newscasts led by longtime anchor Joe Moore. For several years KHON and KGMB were run as a duopoly in the Honolulu market by its former owners, Emmis. KGMB TV is still owned by Emmis and has been on the market for several months awaiting a new owner.
The station's sale and management woes have become items for constant news fodder and online discussions. Links to the news items and discussion topics are posted below:

The on and off again Hawaii Radio & Television Guide polls continue. For the last few weeks we asked "Who do you think should be the next Democrat nominee for one of Hawaii's U.S. Senate seat"? The choices were between incumbent Senator Dan Akaka and 2nd district Congressman Ed Case. The non-scientific informal poll indicates that Case has a slim lead. The poll results can be found at this link. Political polls will as well as those about local media will continue at this site. Political parties and candidates spend a lot of money advertising in local media, hence the political poll questions at this site. A new poll continues this week. See the poll question on the left.
