Online journalism and the impact of weblogs and indepdent news websites on traditional news media was the subject of a spirited discussion at yesterday's Honolulu Community Media Council luncheon forum. The forum panel featured web publishers Burt Lum of Brouhaha.net, Ryan Ozawa of HawaiiNews.com and Malia Zimmerman of HawaiiReporter.com. They talked about their websites and answered questions regarding the differences between "blogging" and "straight news." Much of the discussion focused on HawaiiReporter.com's coverage of the Jennifer Bainum story that the mainsteam media outlets (TV and print) did not cover. Zimmerman stated that the information was already out there in public records and that traditional media outlets should have reported on the story back in 1997 and 2001. Ozawa reported that many weblogs are reactionary to news and information published elsewhere. While news operations are generally "for profit" businesses, HawaiiReporter follows a business plan based largely on subscriptions to their public records service while weblogs have so far been non-revenue producing entities. At the forum's conclusion, most agreed that the internet has created a means where anyone can excerise their first amendment rights and create their own news and opinion entities that can be a challenge to traditional news media. Media News from Around the Dial and the Internet Honolulu Advertiser Entertainment writer Wayne Harada has done a series of feature articles on the current state of the ever changing radio environment in Hawaii. The articles touches on aspects of the industry that most visitors to this site already know: Michael W. Perry and Larry Price's longevity as market leaders in Honolulu, the consolidation of radio station ownership, mention of the ongoing FCC frequency auction, rock music's apparent retreat from the market, listener demos and station retention among other items. The articles can be accessed at this link: Honolulu Advertiser's "Stick Around For More Radio Changes". The ongoing controversy of the Jennifer Bainum court case story and its impact on the recently completed mayoral election covered at HawaiiReporter.com's website continues to generate responses from the mainstream media, numerous discussions and more articles from Hawaii Reporter itself on the issue. An ongoing discussion topic on whether or not the mainstream media dropped the ball on this can be accessed at our Media Forum page. Hawaii's internet media gets its day in the spotlight with a luncheon forum today sponsored by the Honolulu Community Media Council. Online publishers Ryan Ozawa of HawaiiNews.com and HawaiiThreads.com (host site of the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide Media Forum), Burt Lum of Brouhaha.net and Malia Zimmerman of HawaiiReporter.com will discuss online publishing, the issues they cover and its impact, if any, on the mainstream media such as broadcast and print. The ongoing FCC Frequency auction has attracted only one local bidder to more than a dozen FM frequencies up for grabs around the state. The auction is attracting a number of mainland based media companies who would like to set up shop in the Hawaii radio market. Local conglomerate, Visionary Related Entertainment is also in the hunt for some key frequencies. The auction continues today. A recap of last Friday's bids can be accessed at this link. You can discuss the auction at our message board link. Last but not least, our latest poll results on the item regarding KITV 4's decision on not to broadcast last Thursday night's ABC TV movie "Saving Private Ryan" yielded 37 responses of which 54% thought it was not a good idea for the station to pull the movie. The final results of the unscientific poll is included at this link.
KITV Pulls Airing of movie "Saving Private Ryan" Hawaii's ABC TV affiliate KITV Channel 4 announced yesterday that it will not air the network broadcast of the Steven Speilberg movie, "Saving Private Ryan." KITV General Manager Mike Rosenberg stated, "There's just not enough clarity for us to make a decision to run a movie that has the 'F Word' 47 times, as well as graphic violence, in a time period that's supposed to be a safe harbor for children to be watching no matter what the advisories that we use. So, we have a fiduciary duty to our owners, to protect our owners, to protect our license. So regretfully, we made this decision." The movie had been shown on KITV before, but since the changing climate due to the Janet Jackson incident on CBS earlier this year, the station made the decision not to air this movie. The CBS network was fined $500,000 by the FCC over that incident with their affiliated stations being fined $27,000 each. In place of "Private Ryan" the station will air the movie "Far And Away" starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. KITV 4 NEWS STORY | STAR-BULLETIN STORY | DISCUSSION TOPIC
News Bits From Around the Dial The FCC FM radio frequency auction continues with several firms bidding on the available dial positions. Among the high biddbidders are Visionary Related Entertainment and Bechtel Broadcasting out of Indiana. The recent controversy on media coverage (or the lack of it at traditional, local media outlets) of the Jennifer Bainum (wife of former mayoral candidate Duke Bainum)story is now a discussion topic at our message board site over at HawaiiThreads.com. Hawaii's Congressional delegation have written a letter to the FCC asking them to grant an expedited approval for a transmitter license for Hawaii Public Radio's KIPO FM on the island of Maui. Over at KHON TV, morning anchors Kirk Matthews and Tannya Joaquin have been temporarily joined by Mr. Matthew's wife, Linda Coble. Ms. Coble is subbing for Trini Kaopuiki who's out on maternity leave. KHON by the way recently revamped their website with a new one at www.khon2.com. KHVH's Roz Makaula recently left the station to take on a new position at the KFVE/KHNL news department. In the "I screwed up" category of news, I was recently alerted by Star 101.9 FM PD Jamie Hyatt that their station did show up in the Top 10 Arbitrons in the past Winter book. Darn I should not be writing these things minutes before I have to step out of the door to go to my real job.
Political Polls Yield Mixed Results The last 2 political polls of this season at the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide site yielded results that in one case, may not reflect the outcome of the national election and in the second case, is more inline with other local polls. In the race for President of the United States, a record number (for this site) of 149 respondents voted in the poll. Surprisingly for a Democrat controlled state, President George W. Bush handily beats John Kerry in our informal, unscientific poll by 24%. The number is strangely skewed in favor of the president given that other polls both informal and scientific indicate a much closer race. The only poll that truly matters will be the one the voters take tomorrow. The race for Honolulu mayor show Duke Bainum ahead of Mufi Hannemann 21 percentage points, which is fairly much inline to polls taken elsewhere. The amount of respondents to this poll totalled 62, which is close to the norm for most of the poll questions taken at this site. There is a possiblity that the polls could have been manipulated by multiple votes. After all these polls are totally non-scientific and very informal. The poll was taken from October 25 to November 1. The final results from each poll can be seen by clicking on the links below. PRESIDENTIAL POLL RESULTS | MAYORAL POLL RESULTS
KSSK Leads in the Summer Arbitrons The Summer 2004 Arbitron ratings were released yesterday. The usual overall market leaders KSSK FM & AM, KINE FM, KCCN FM, KRTR FM and KDNN FM lead the pack of radio stations at the top of the ratings heap. The morning show of Michael W. Perry and Larry Price on Clear Channel's KSSK continues its long legacy of being the #1 morning show in the Honolulu market. What is surprising is 104.3 FM's rise into the Top 10. The station formerly known as XME104.3 with their old call letters of KXME rose in the ratings and took over the top spot in the hip-hop music race to be that genre's market leader from "rival" 102.7 FM "Da Bomb". Both stations are in the overall top 10. XME recently switched their call letters to KPHW and monicker to "Power 104.3" concentrating mainly on hip-hop and R&B music. Seemingly, the old KPOI's demise has benefitted Clear Channel's alternative rocker "Star 101.9 FM" as that station enters the top 10 for the first time in a very long time. The old KPOI at 97.5 FM which featured a mix of alternative, metal and classic rock switched formats this past summer to talk and new call letters, KHNR. The old KPOI call letters went to Visionary's former KAHA 105.9 FM that still features a classic rock format. The new KPOI numbers went up from the previous period by .4 percentage points. Visionary's KUMU FM experienced one of the bigger drops this book as it fell out of the top 10 and is now in the middle of pack. While talk radio is not all that popular in the Honolulu market, format leader KHVH 830 AM still leads the talk radio pack, just a few points ahead of sports-talker, KKEA 1420 AM.

Starting next Monday, KIKU TV Channel 20 on the UHF dial (9 on Cable) will start carrying 2 hour blocks of UPN network programming. The UPN blocks will air between 4 and 6PM Mondays through Fridays. KIKU's Japanese and other ethnic programs will continue in other time blocks. Hawaii Public Radio's pledge drive has nearly reached its lofty $497,000 goal while KTUH's recent fundraising effort fell short by about $2000. Cox radio's "Power 104.3" hip hop station has changed its call letters over from KXME to KPHW to better reflect on its new market identity.
Mixed Results in Perry & Price Replacement Poll The just completed Hawaii Radio & Television Guide poll asking to name a possible, theoretical successor to KSSK's morning duo of Michael W. Perry and Larry Price yielded a very mixed result among our respondents. The poll was a light hearted exercise that asked respondents who'd they choose to replace the venerable morning duo. Responses varied from "look for outside talent" to possible morning teams within the local Clear Channel organization. In that area KSSK's Dick Wainwright and Kathy With a K were the top vote getters followed by Hot 93.9's Rory Wild and Greg Hammer. The totally unscientific poll proved to be popular enough among our small sample size that someone even started a discussion topic on the subject. That topic remains open for further discussion. Final poll results can be viewed by clicking the appropriate link below. This week's poll take a final look at the Presidential and Mayoral races as the November 2 general election nears. Broadcast related polls will resume after November 1. P & P REPLACEMENT POLL RESULTS | DISCUSSION TOPIC
"Lost" Picked Up For Full Season by ABC ABC TV has ordered 9 additional episodes of the TV series "Lost" which premiered last month to very high ratings. The program filmed on Oahu is about a group of castaways stranded on a strange island of unknown origin is an apparent breakout hit for the network, snagging a consistent rating in the Nielsen Top 10 and winning its Wednesday night time slot. It costs about $3 to $4 million to produce a single episode of "Lost", making it one of Hollywood's most expensive TV series in recent history. The series order brings lost up to a full complement of a 22-episode TV season. The retainment of "Lost" on the network schedule bodes well for Hawaii's fledgling film industry which has seen up to 3 regular TV series being shot in the islands since the summer. Earlier this week, NBC TV announced that their island based series, "Hawaii" was being cancelled due to poor ratings. "Hawaii" had aired in the timeslot directly opposite of "Lost". Fox's "North Shore" is still hanging on to that network's prime time schedule, though ratings have not been stellar. "Lost" is a Touchstone Studios production, one of ABC TV's sister companies, both owned by the Disney Corporation. MORE DETAILS | ABC TV'S LOST WEBSITE | DISCUSSION TOPIC
FCC Auctioning 10 Hawaii State FM Frequencies The Federal Communications Commission will be auctioning off the rights to build 10 new FM stations in the islands on November 3. Several companies will be vying for the frequencies including stalwarts such as Visionary Entertainment LLC (owners of several stations on Oahu, Kauai and Maui), Big Island Broadcasting Inc., and Cumulus Media Inc., a media firm that wants to enter the market. The auction had been delayed by the FCC since 1997. Several communities on all of the major islands will be eligible to get a new radio station even though a firm securing the rights to build in that community does not necessarily have to set up a studio there. NBC Cancels "Hawaii" NBC cancelled "Hawaii". The TV cop series had been struggling in the ratings ever since its debut last month. Most notably the ratings dropped significantly after the debut of ABC's "Lost" which is also filmed on Oahu. Cast and crew were notified of the cancellation at their Mapunapuna sound studios yesterday during the production of a new episode. The show's cancellation will be a loss for Hawaii's economy as each episode cost about $2 million to make with most of the money spent here in the islands. NBC will continue to pay its rent on its one year lease for studio space in Mapunapuna. MORE DETAILS AT THIS LINK | DISCUSSION TOPIC
Aloha Radio Group's KHWI FM has made a format switch to adult contemporary music. The station previously featured an island reggae mix. KHWI's new monicker is "Mix 92.7 FM" and fills a void in the Hilo and East Hawaii market with a format that has been missing for quite sometime. KHWI's music mix will feature AC stalwarts such as Madonna, Elton John, Celine Dion, Earth Wind & Fire, Shania Twain, Backstreet Boys, Martina McBride, Luther Vandross, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, Sugar Ray, Journey, Chicago, Clay Aiken, Whitney Houston, Faith Hill, Stevie Wonder and more. The target audience is the 18 to 49 demographic in the Hilo area. Regular features on the new Mix 92.7 include Daily local news, world news, entertainment reports, surf & ocean condition reports, community calendar and Casey Kasem's weekly "American Top 10" every Sunday morning from 9 a.m. to Noon. KHWI can be reached at (808) 934-9448 or at mix927 (@) hawaiian927.com (email format purposely out of context to thwart spammers).
Around the Dial This Week Word this past weekend is that the NBC TV series "Hawaii" is about one step short of cancellation as the cop show has been put on hiatus from its Wednesday night prime time schedule. The show has suffered from low ratings and has taken a beating from the other made in Hawaii series, ABC TV's "Lost" which is in the process of becoming a bonafide hit for the network. Production of "Hawaii" will continue for the time being with episodes to be aired later in the season. Both series are being shot in Hawaii. Mayoral candidtes Duke Bainum and Mufi Hannemann have agreed to debate each other for one hour next Tuesday night, October 26 on ABC TV affiliate KITV Channel 4. This is the only scheduled televised debate between the 2 candidates prior to the November 2 election. The candidates will be fielding questions from KITV and Honolulu Star Bulletin reporters as well as from the public. Hawaii Radio & Television Guide's most recent unscientific poll indicate that the lead in this race belongs to Bainum. KGMB TV is broadcasting a music special based on Honolulu Magazine's recent "50 Greatest Hawaii Albums" list. The show airs this coming Wednesday night, October 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Music from all 50 albums will be featured as well as rare footage, interviews and stories about the artists. This week's Hawaii Radio & Television Guide poll is a fun and speculative exercise. It asks you to play the role of PD and name a theoretical successor to the popular KSSK morning team of Perry & Price. Don't take it seriously, this is being done only for fun. The poll appears at the left. LINKS: HAWAII OFF THE AIR | MAYORAL DEBATE | 50 GREATEST HAWAII ALBUMS

KFVE is Hawaii's WB network station and is most well known for being "The Home Team" broadcast outlet for University of Hawaii sports. MORE DETAILS | MESSAGE BOARD TOPIC
Cox Radio's KXME 104.3 FM has gone through a format adjustment. According to posters at our message board, the station has adjusted its mix to feature more hip-hop music and is now under a new monicker: "Power 104.3". On the national front, the ABC TV series "Lost" that is filmed in Hawaii is that network's 2nd most popular new TV show. "Lost" was recently in the Top 10 most viewed shows of the week, with ABC's debut of the new "Desparate Housewives" leading the pack at #1. Both shows air on local affiliate KITV Channel 4. Writer and cybergeek Burt Lum has pulled the plug on his weekly talk and music show, "Rough Take" that aired this year on KORL 690 AM. The last broadcast was on September 28. On the Big Island, radio station KKOA 107.7 FM recently became radio active again with a country music format.
Our three most recent polls concluded this week at the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide. For this site, participation was quite high in both political polls, the Presidential which ran for one week in late September to October 3. Surprisingly President George W. Bush garnered the most votes in this poll. Another Presidential poll will be taken shortly after the last of the scheduled three debates this week. In the race for Honolulu Mayor, Duke Bainum seems to be the reader's favorite. That poll ran from October 2 to October 10. Our least most popular poll of all time asked whether or not TV viewers subscribed to the University of Hawaii Football season PPV broadcast. The small sample size indicated that next to no one subscribed to this. Of course all polls are unscientific in nature and will not reflect the actual outcome of the the true votes on election day. The TV poll can be discounted due to the very small sample size and the fact that this site does not draw many sports enthusiasts. Poll result graphics can be seen at the links below. Be sure to participate in the latest poll. PRESIDENTIAL POLL RESULTS | MAYORAL POLL RESULTS | PPV TV SPORTS POLL

FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell launched a multi-year, multi-phased consumer education and outreach campaign ³DTV n Get it!² designed to inform the public about the digital television (DTV) transition and the availability of high-definition and other digital content and to provide resources for Americans interested in joining the DTV ranks. Powell recognized the significant advances made by the government and the industry over the last several years in increasing the availability of digital and high-definition programming available to the American public. He also cited the growing popularity of DTV, and acknowledged consumer confusion about the changing digital television landscape. "Although for the vast majority of American households, digital television may be uncharted territory, we will not let them go it alone," Powell said. "If you have questions about digital television, the FCC is ready to serve as a primary resource for quick answers. Then we hope they will get DTV n get the set, get the connection, get the content" he said. Powell unveiled a new web portal http://www.dtv.gov to serve as a one-stop source of information on the DTV transition and available high-definition programming. The site allows consumers to find a list of high-definition programming options available in their home, answers to frequently asked questions about the DTV transition and a guide for DTV shoppers. The FCC also announced a joint effort with the commitment from the Consumer Electronic Association (CEA) and the Consumer Electronics Retailers Coalition (CERC) on the creation and distribution of a DTV Tip Sheet.
Former Honolulu Radio Personality Bill Ballance Dies Bill Ballance who once worked in Honolulu radio in the 1960s died in his home on Thursday, September 23. Ballance made a name for himself when he started a program called the "Feminine Forum" in Los Angeles on KGBS AM in 1971. His bold talk show tackled topics ranging from relationships to sex and was the first of its kind in the genre. He is credited for paving the way for today's "shock jock" meisters such as Howard Stern who deal with similar content over the airwaves today. Ballance worked at many radio stations in Colorado, California and Hawaii starting in 1941. While in Hawaii, Ballance was employed at KHVH and KGMB radio in 1966, according to the website "440 Satisfaction". Ballance retired from the radio business in 1993. The Hawaii Radio & Television Guide's latest unscientific poll results show that KHVH 830 AM, KKEA 1420 AM and KHNR 97.5 FM are the most popular talk format radio stations preferred by readers on this site. The poll generated a response from 68 individuals and was held for a little over a week. 29% of the respondents picked conservative talk radio station KHVH as their favorite, 19% like the talk and sports format of KKEA and 16% like to hear their conservative talk shows on KHNR FM 97.5. 12% of our respondents indicated "None of the Above" and are apparently not talk radio listeners. This week we have 2 polls on our site. You can vote for who you think should be the next President of the United States and you can choose whether or not you watch "Hawaii", "Lost", both or none of them in our latest poll. Both polls end on October 2. POLL RESULTS: HAWAII'S FAVORITE TALK RADIO STATIONS

The Federal Communications Commission issued a Notice of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture of $550,000 against various subsidiaries of Viacom Inc. for apparently willfully broadcasting indecent material during the February 1, 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show. The show contained a musical performance that concluded with Justin Timberlake pulling off part of Janet Jacksonıs clothing, exposing her breast. The Commission found that this partial nudity was, in the context of the broadcast, in apparent violation of the broadcast indecency standard. It proposed the statutory maximum amount against each of the Viacom- owned CBS licensees of the 20 television stations that aired the show due to the involvement of Viacom/ CBS in the planning and approval of the telecast and the history of indecency violations committed by Viacomıs Infinity Broadcasting Corporation subsidiaries. Although the Commission found that other, non- Viacom owned CBS affiliates also aired the material, it did not propose forfeitures against them because of the unexpected nature of the halftime show and the apparent lack of involvement in the selection, planning, and approval of the telecast by these non- Viacom owned affiliates. The fine is the latest in a series of misfortunes for the CBS network which recently was involved in a scandal regarding the authenticity of documents used in conjunction with a "60 Minutes" report on President George W. Bush aired by host Dan Rather. CBS NETWORK | FCC WEBSITE | COMPLETE STORY (PR)
News Briefs Around the Radio Dial A move by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last week to temporarily freeze radio station swaps will delay the trade of KGMZ 107.9 FM from Cox to Salem for their 2 AM radio stations, KHNR 650 AM and KHCM 940 AM. The ownership swap will be delayed until November at the earliest. KHNR AM was off the air for about a week but was on again last night simulcasting its talk format once again with KHNR FM 97.5. Salem also started simulcasting KHUI FM's Hawaiian music program format on AM at newly the newly rebadged KUPA 1370 AM (formerly KENT). Back at Cox, Ola Souza started hosting KRTR FM's "Love Songs" program Monday night. Finally on Maui, Visionary has changed the call letters of KAOI AM 1110 to KPOI AM 1110 according to FCC records. Satellite TV Services Gaining Popularity Satellite TV, long the poor stepchild to cable TV is gaining marketshare and subscribers in Hawaii. In recent months satellite TV services offered by Dish Network and Direct TV have been eroding marketshare enjoyed by Hawaii's only cable TV company, Time Warner Oceanic Cable. The Satellite services are now offering Hawaii subscribers a gamut of channel options, local TV broadcast stations and various promotions including free installation as selling points for their service. Waiting lists for satellite TV installation have now backed up to three weeks by the 2 firms offering the service. Despite this, the satellite TV firms are not disclosing how many local customers they have. A spokesperson from Oceanic Cable has responded that many satellite customers do eventually return to cable. All offerings by satellite TV firms are in digital, unlike Oceanic who offer both digital and analog services. MORE DETAILS AT THIS LINK | DIRECT TV | DISH NETWORK | DISCUSSION TOPIC

Long after the gritty, made-in-Hawaii TV series Hawaii Five-0 went off the air, it was announced today that Warner Brothers will be bankrolling and producing a new big screen version of the venerable and popular television show. The new movie could start shooting in Hawaii early next year. A script is yet to be written and casting needs to be set. The film will be co-produced by George Litto who was once an agent for original series producer Leonard Freeman. The new movie will cost at least $100 million to make. While no leads have been cast, speculation on the role of Steve McGarrett centers on actors George Clooney, Harrison Ford, Michael Douglas and Mel Gibson. The original role of Steve McGarrett was played by the late Jack Lord from 1968 to 1980. Hawaii Five-0 originally aired on the CBS network and enjoys a syndication run all over the world today. The program is shown locally on weekenights at 7:PM on KWHE TV Channel 14.
Classic Radio Hits Available on Compact Disc
Also appearing for the first time on a local compilation CD are Three Dog Night's cover of the Jesse Colin-Young track "Sunlight", Liz Damon & the Orient Express' only Billboard Top 40 hit, "1900 Yesterday," and The Stylistics' classic B-side which became a hit in its own right, "Ebony Eyes". Other local favorites include Ku'i Lee's original recording of "I'll Remember You," the Makaha Sons of Niihau's "Hawaii 78", Cecilio & Kapono's "Sunflower", Country Comfort's "Pretty Girl" and Kalapana's "You Make It Hard." Well known top 40 hits are also on the disc including Sonny Gerraci & Climax's "Precious & Few" which hit #1 in Hawaii back in 1971, 6 months before it hit the top 10 nationally; The Stampeders' "Sweet City Woman," King Harvest's "Dancing in the Moonlight," Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones," and Beverly Bremers' "Don't Say You Don't Remember." In a recent poll run at the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide, we asked readers which songs would you like to own on a CD. Some of the songs listed in that poll are now included on this new release. Most of the songs on Island Summer 60s and 70s were in regular rotation on AM radio stations of the day including KKUA, KPOI, KORL, KMVI and KCCN. Producer Pati St. John consulted with the publisher of the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide on track inclusion, chart history and background information on some of the songs and artists. Narrowing down the amount of songs from available tracks to include on this release was hard to do. Neos Productions is well known in the music community for releasing outstanding island music compilation CDs and individual albums by artists such as Justin, Bitty McLean, Kekoa, Norm, Reality and the Ka'ala Boys.

The NBC TV series "Hawaii" will make its television debut tonight on KHNL TV Channel 8. The series already had a sneak preview at this past weekend's "Sunset on the Beach" event in Waikiki before crowds of thousands. "Hawaii" is the latest prime time made in Hawaii program to be broadcast this year. Already airing is Fox TV's "North Shore," which will be filming more episodes despite low ratings so far. Set to debut later this month on September 22 is ABC-TV's "Lost". Both "Hawaii" and "Lost" will compete head to head on Wednesday nights once the networks start broadcasting a regular fall schedule. "Hawaii" is a light crime drama, and "Lost" is an adventure series about plane crash survivors on a tropic island. A fourth TV series "Rocky Point" is set to air on the WB network and a fifth series with a Hawaii connection involves bounty hunter and Hawaii resident Duane "Dog" Chapman, which made its debut last night on the A&E Cable network.
