BOB FM has a great line-up of music... I grew up with 70's, 80's and 90's rock - all music that I know and own myself on CD. The Police, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, The Cars.. just to name a few!
BOB FM actually would have been a great rock alternative on Oahu's radio dial, except for one major set-back... it REPLACED a station that's more important to Hawaii (and myself) than rock music - It replaced the ALOHA SPIRIT, or more specifically, "THE SPIRIT OF HAWAII".
Please bring back The Breeze,

Those Canadian accents are very noticeable on
those callers testimonials. You know that O sound
thing.
Need the local da kine to make Bob Local. Maybe name change of station to Kimo.

Here are other stations doing the BOB FM format... some are like ours others are not. URLs listed below:
http://www.999bobfm.com/
http://www.939bobfm.com/
http://www.bob.fm/
News article about BOB FM
http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/LondonFreePress/News/2003/07/26/145902.html
I don't know if this Bob is up and running:
http://www.barkingcat.org/eos/bobfm.htm
Bob from near his hometown in Canada:
http://www.chumlimited.com/radio/stationpage.asp?stationID=74
Here's a Bob that probably was The Point:
http://www.1037thepoint.com/
Here are a couple of Country Bobs:
http://www.bobradio.com/main.html
http://www.bob106.com/
http://www.bob1025fm.com/
Now I wonder who came first, the country Bobs or the Bobs with the 80, 90s & whatevers?
I guess in time if Bob proliferates we could see more of the same as the airwaves gets covered with Bobs. Someone remind me to do a Google search next year and see if Bob has proliferated around the country and elsewhere in Canada and around the world.
When is the Hawaii Bob website going to be online?
Whoever finds it first, please email me.
Thanks,
Mel not Bob

Considering that 99.5 BOB-FM is a complete knock-off of the Canadian stations, and the Country BOB-FM's are Clear Channel stations. I'll bet on the Country ones. I wonder how much New Wave is paying CHUM for the BOB-FM moniker and format.

I dont understand it? I remember when 98.5 was a rock and roll station? I remember when clear channel cut it off and brought island music to 98.5. Clear Channel has lanai and augie for the morning show. Now if khui had a comedy team in the morning would they have done better or would they have been cut? Now bob has come in and is it a good chioce or will they keep it on full automation with no air jocks to keep it going? And how much of rating share will a no air jock station get? I always thought a station is part music and part air persona? Let me take my medication and ponder?

Don't worry!
You'll hear jocks on BOB-FM real soon. It's not going to be automated. Automation stinks.

Um... you mean 99.5, not 98.5, right?
I think he did mean 98.5, when it was KKLV-FM Live 98.5. Those were the good ole days when they played "Mark & Brian" from Los Angeles. Then they went to a local morning show, then they dumped rock for hawaiian. Anyone remember what the call letters were for 98.5 before, KKLV-FM?

If you visit the archive pages of the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide, I have old dial lists from the late 80s and 90s posted there. 98.5 FM was a new age station when it first started in 1986 or so.

Dxer is right they did have { 98.5}mark and brian on the morning show.It was pretty good mark and brian had celebrity guests more often than any radio local show. Now if they dumped a rock station then, why change 99.5 to rock? Has the demographics changed to add another rock station? Play something else?
I'll wait for my medication to kick in.

Food for thought ,Why drop KHUI when the rating for Kpoi was worst than KHUI? Wasn't it owned by the same comapany?
?
How is BOB going to win the rating games?
Is BOB personality driven radio?
Do they want to win?
Do they do so so and survive?
How can the sales dept sell the shows?
If sales good ,do they keep BOB?
How can they different and fun to listen to?
How well do they expect to do in their first book?
How does Bob be a different rock and roll from KPOI?
Hawaii has a small pie do they draw listeners from who or what radio stations ?18-35? 35-55?
Who is their target audience?
I am not for or against Bob.
I'm just thinking about stuff. too much cola in the morning?
Let me think about this and lie down for a while.

Re: the previous post..
In my humble opinion.....after all I am a "Media Veteran"!...
Q: Why drop KHUI when the rating for Kpoi was worst than KHUI?
A: Better oppotunity for BOB than KHUI, I would guess. Turning KPOI into BOB would not have been a large enough "change". KPOI makes more money that Breeze did. KPOI has heritage - whatever that is worth. If and when KAHA moves to a new format, KPOI should benefit.
Q: How is BOB going to win the rating games?
A: The same way that other radio stations win the ratings "game". Music, promotion, and personality. From what I've heard, lots of people really like BOB. They're excited about it. The public will have a chance to "vote", just as they did in the summer.
Q:Is BOB personality driven radio?
A: BOB is the personality of the station - and judging by the listener comments that they play - there are lots of people who "get it".
Q: Do they want to win?
A: What makes you think they don't want to win? Does Maverick want to win with KAHA? From the latest ratings you would think they didn't, but I would bet they do. In fact I know they do. Aren't there some new people at New Wave? Why would they want to lose?
Q: Do they do so so and survive?
A: What is "so so"?
Q: How can the sales dept sell the shows?
A: I would assume that they will sell it like any other sales staff sells radio advertising. If not them, then someone else.
Q: If sales good ,do they keep BOB?
A: Yes, If sales good, they keep BOB. I don't think they would have done the research, changed the format, listened to all the cry-babies about the sacred music of the islands, and invested money if they thought it would fail! Am I missing something here? Why is it that this BOB thing is getting second guessed? I know more and more people who are listening to it. Lot's of Cox and Clear Channel people that I know like it -a lot! But they would never admit it.
Q: How can they different and fun to listen to?
A: It's already different! I would bet that right now they're just burning in the sound of the station since they're so new. From what I've read, there will be jocks ont he air after the new year, contests, all the same old news, weather, traffic, etc. I don't think the wackey dj schtick is going to be heard.
Q: How well do they expect to do in their first book?
A: From what they told me, they don't expect it to be all that fantastic, although anything can happen. It has debutted # 1 or 2 everywhere else its been.
Q: How does Bob be a different rock and roll from KPOI?
A: The question is, how is it similar? If you hear the same song on both KPOI and BOB, please let us all know. I'm not aware of any crossover at all - maybe Pearl Jam, but isn't that what "whatever" is all about? I don't think it's even a question!
Q: Hawaii has a small pie do they draw listeners from who or what radio stations ?18-35? 35-55?
A: From the presentation I saw, the target is 25-49 and the project they did showed audience coming from KAHA, KRTR, and KSSK. But I think they're going to steal audience from KUCD before KSSK. I've heard people say that they are going to cannibalize from KQMQ, but that's pretty stupid. I would bet there will be minimal sharing there - however not nearly as much sharing as some of the Clear Channel stations duplicate each other. From the sound of the station - it appears to be a very sound strategy. Time will tell.
Who is their target audience?
I am not for or against Bob.
I'm just thinking about stuff. too much cola in the morning?
Let me think about this and lie down for a while.
[/quoted]
I am very much for BOB. I like the sound of it - it seems to get better every day. When they get jocks on the air it will only make it that much better. I've heard that there are a few Clear Channel and Cox jocks who have already made inquiries about opportunities. Should be interesting.

Hi Danny, your response was predictable.
But has any other station in recent memory botched a launch more than you? I can not to my best abilities recall any such time. Hard enough to begin a new station without haveing to dig yourself out of a hole that collapses on you every other moment.
Perhaps after the Q sale goes through, let's say if you ever decide to accept a fair price, and your already low rev drops by a third and more cost cutting maneuvers are undertaken and more staff is fired you will have time to run a cluster instead of spending time writing on internet message boards preaching to the wrong people. You don't need to convince your competition that you are doing the right thing. You need to increase morale at your company, what is left of it, and convince your advertisers that your plan is right.

Results of some quick research on 98.5:
Call sign history: KOOH as of 3/26/1984, KHHH as of 3/29/1984, KKLV date unknown, KDNN as of 11/05/1999. It was issued new CPs at least twice as extensions of originals lapsed.
There may have been owners prior to KHVH Inc., but that co. sold it to San Francisco's Marina Radio in 1994. It was purchased by Henry Hawaii Broadcasting Co. Inc. in 1995 and then to AM/FM/ClearChannel predecessor Patterson Honolulu License Corp. in Oct. 1996. I'd better get back to that deadline thing now.

Add another "Bob" to the US. A country station in Oklahoma City has flipped and is now "96.9 BOB-FM". Same format as our "Bob" but different moniker, there's is "Bob knows Classic Hits".

Sad but I've seen this happen so many times. A bright idea from someone from the mainland who believes they know what Hawaii wants. I loved the Breeze. The format on Bob is to common for me to place on my favorite station.Bob, "na mele Hawaii no ka oi"

If so much research went into bob fm,Why wasnt the same amount of research given to 99.5.When they changed format?
And 99.5 was not personality driven. There was no morning show.Is bobfm taking the same approach?
I m not hating ,just asking?
I like bob because they play creed once in a while.
I like the music better then 101.9.If you can get someone funnier than hudson, you may have a better chance.Im not hating just asking.
